The Kaali Crater

A meteorite crater on the Estonian island of Saaremaa, formed around 1500 BC — within the memory of people living nearby. The blast burned the forest for six kilometres, and the event probably entered Finnish and Norse mythology as the sun falling. The lake in the crater served as a sacrificial site for centuries: animal bones are found on the bed and around the shore, and a stone wall once enclosed it.
