Data and cookies

Short and specific: what the site stores, what for, and how to get rid of it. If something here doesn't suit you, that feature can be left alone or the account deleted.

Your account

Needed only to add places, vote and send messages. The whole site reads fine without one.

  • Email and password — the password is stored only as a hash, and cannot be recovered, by us either.
  • Name and username — other people see these; that is the point of them.
  • Karma and moderation history, so the rules apply the same way to everyone.

What you publish

Legends, photos and comments are public and indexed by search engines — that is what a catalogue is for.

  • The coordinates and photographs of a place you add.
  • Images on places and corrections are reviewed by a moderator before they appear; avatars and pictures in messages are also screened automatically.

Strictly necessary cookies

Always on and exempt from consent — the site does not function without them, which the law provides for directly.

  • Your sign-in session; without it every page would log you out.
  • Your chosen language, your theme, and the record of the decision you made on this page — all kept in your browser.
  • An anonymous page-view counter. It counts how many times a page was opened and nothing else: no cookie, no IP address, no identifier, no record of you — only a number that goes up by one. That is also why it cannot tell one person from two, and why it needs no consent: it neither stores nor reads anything on your device.

Analytics

Nothing loads until you press Accept. Refusing breaks nothing — the site behaves identically.

  • Vercel Web Analytics — anonymous page views, no cookies. Google Analytics — sets cookies (_ga), recognises return visits, sends data to Google. Yandex Metrica — sets cookies (_ym_*) and, with session replay on, records the session itself: pointer movement, scrolling and interactions; the data goes to Yandex's servers.
  • None of it loads until you agree. You can withdraw at any time via "Cookie settings" at the foot of the page; collection stops and the analytics cookies are deleted.

Partner services and advertising

Nothing runs until you press Accept. This is what keeps the site going: it is free and carries no banner ads, and it pays for itself through affiliate links.

  • The “directions”, “where to stay” and “tours” links under each legend are ordinary links with a partner marker in the address. They set no cookies and work regardless of your decision.
  • Travelpayouts Drive — an affiliate network’s script. It finds mentions of hotels, flights and booking services on the page by itself and turns them into affiliate links, and reports the pages you viewed and the links you followed so a booking can be credited. It runs only with your consent to “Partner services”.
  • You can withdraw through the “Cookie settings” link at the foot of any page: the script stops loading and the cookies set on this site are deleted. Cookies the partner set on its own domain are beyond our reach — those go through your browser settings.

Your rights

What is stored about you stays under your control.

  • Delete your account, and your data goes with it.
  • Withdraw analytics consent from one link at the foot of any page.
  • We do not sell your data. The only sharing with third parties is with the Travelpayouts affiliate network and the analytics services, and only if you agreed to it; refusing takes one click and breaks nothing.
