Ängelholm and the Monument to a Landing
On 18 May 1946 a Swedish businessman named Gösta Carlsson said he came upon a disc-shaped craft and its crew in the woods outside this town. He later maintained that what he learned there helped him develop an allergy remedy, on which he built his fortune. In 1972 Carlsson erected a concrete monument on the spot — a circle with an account of the event. It is still there, and appears to be the only monument in the world put up at his own expense by the witness of his own encounter. 1946 in Sweden was the year of the ghost rockets: that summer the country collected some two thousand reports of projectile-like objects, and a proportion of them are unexplained still.
Herobrine
A character that was never in the game. In 2010 an anonymous user posted a Minecraft screenshot of a player figure with no pupils standing in fog, and a story that it was the creator's brother. The rumour outlived every denial: for years players sent in evidence — squares of felled forest, sand pyramids, tunnels nobody built — and the developers eventually took to adding "Removed Herobrine" to their patch notes as a joke, though there was nothing to remove. His code has never existed in any version of the game.
Storsjön and the Great Lake Monster
Sweden's fifth-largest lake, whose creature was first recorded in 1635 in a tale of two trolls boiling something on the shore until a serpent came out of the cauldron. From 1894 to 1986 it was formally protected under Swedish law — a rare case of a state protecting something that probably does not exist. The protection was lifted at fishermen's request; a monument to the serpent still stands in Östersund.
