The range east of Phoenix, wrapped around the legend of the Lost Dutchman's Mine — a gold vein the German Jacob Waltz supposedly found in the 1870s and took to his grave. Dozens of searchers have died or vanished here since, several found beheaded. The Apache hold these mountains to be an entrance to the underworld and warned against disturbing them, a warning gold hunters have traditionally ignored.

The Phoenix Lights

On the evening of 13 March 1997 a line of lights crossed Arizona, seen by thousands of people over nearly five hundred kilometres, from Nevada to the Mexican border. Nearly every account agrees: five or seven lights in a fixed formation, moving slowly and without sound, and a dark mass between them that blotted out the stars. The military attributed it to flares dropped over the Barry Goldwater range, and for the later part of the evening that fits. For the first part, around half past eight, it does not: the formation crossed the city well before the exercise. The governor of the day, Fife Symington, mocked the story at a press conference. Ten years later he said he had seen the object himself and could not identify it.

Snowflake and Travis Walton's Five Days

On 5 November 1975 a logging crew was driving down from a cut in the Arizona mountains when, by every man's account, a glowing disc appeared over the road. Twenty-two-year-old Travis Walton got out and walked towards it; a flash threw him backwards and the others fled. He was searched for over five days, on the ground and from the air. Six witnesses took polygraph tests — five passed clearly, one was inconclusive. After five days Walton rang from a phone box in a nearby town, exhausted, and described waking on a table among figures with enormous eyes. Sceptics note that the crew was behind on its contract and escaped the penalty. Walton and his crewmates have held to the account for half a century.

A town among the red rocks of Arizona that people have come to since the 1980s for its "vortexes" — points where visitors hold that the earth's energy surfaces, felt as tingling, dizziness or unusual clarity. Kashkulak Cave (colloquially known as the "Cave of the Black Devil" or the "White Shaman's Cave") is a karst cavern system in the Batenevsky Ridge of the Kuznetsk Alatau mountains, situated in the Shirinsky District of Khakassia, Russia. Featuring a three-tier network of galleries descending to a depth of 49 meters with over 800 meters of mapped corridors, the site earned notoriety in the late Soviet period as an anomalous subterranean hotspot where explorers and scientists experienced acute panic attacks, disorientation, and waking hallucinations.

The Molebka Triangle
