The town of Fyffe in DeKalb County, situated atop the Sand Mountain plateau in Alabama, USA, is a small agricultural community with a population of around one thousand, officially designated by the state legislature as the "UFO Capital of Alabama." The town gained national notoriety in 1989 following a widespread wave of unidentified flying object sightings and unusual occurrences on local farms.

Danger Level: Yellow (Anomalies are observed, but no one is harmed) Between February and April 1989, over fifty residents, including the town mayor and local police officers, reported sightings of colossal aerial craft. Eyewitness accounts described silent, dark triangular and curved, banana-shaped vessels the size of football fields gliding low over tree lines, illuminating the terrain with green beacons and intense spotlights. The lore was heightened by accounts of sudden radio interference, car electronics stalling, and nearby livestock found with unusual, bloodless surgical-like cuts.

What actually happened?

Aviation analysts and skeptics link the sightings to the region's proximity to major military research installations, notably the U.S. Army's Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville. The area was frequently used for nocturnal helicopter exercises, flare-dropping operations, and testing emerging stealth aviation technology in the late 1980s. Heavy media coverage catalyzed mass suggestion, prompting residents to misidentify celestial bodies (such as Venus) and high-altitude aircraft as alien craft, while reported cattle mutilations aligned with typical scavenger predation and natural decomposition.

History

A flood of emergency calls in early 1989 prompted Police Chief Junior Garmany and Mayor Fred Cash to publicly acknowledge the unexplained aerial activity. The influx brought national investigative programs (such as Unsolved Mysteries and Sightings) and field researchers from organizations like MUFON directly to the town. The Alabama State Legislature capitalized on the fame by formally proclaiming Fyffe the state's UFO Capital, prompting the town to embrace the identity through local festivals, balloon launches, and themed tourism.

The Dare Stones

In 1937 a stranger brought a quartz boulder to Emory University in Atlanta with an inscription signed by Eleanor Dare — mother of Virginia Dare of the lost colony of Roanoke. The stone explained what had become of the colonists. Over four years another forty-odd turned up, scattered across Georgia and the Carolinas, and together they traced a coherent route. On the night of 24 July 1948 the crew of an Eastern Air Lines DC-3 was over Alabama. Captain Clarence Chiles and First Officer John Whitted saw a cigar-shaped object with two rows of glowing windows and a tail of flame coming towards them; it passed and climbed away. Both men banked hard to avoid it. One passenger confirmed a flash of light. On the ground that same night a similar object was reported over Robins Field in Georgia. The modern explanation is a large fireball, several of which crossed the south-eastern states in those weeks. The row of windows remains the detail a fireball accounts for least well.
