Mount Elbrus
The highest peak in Europe and a dormant volcano to which, in one version of the tradition, Prometheus was chained. The mountain has accumulated a body of stories of its own: the Priyut 11 hut that burned in 1998, the bodies of German Edelweiss division troops found where they planted a flag in 1942, and figures in the mist that climbers describe in almost the same words used on Scotland's Ben Macdui.
The Hellfire Club on Montpelier Hill
A hunting lodge built above Dublin in 1725, using stone taken from a prehistoric cairn destroyed for the purpose — locals said at once it would end badly. The roof was taken off by a storm soon after. The Irish Hellfire Club later took the building over; accounts of what went on inside vary, and the best-known has a card game at which one of the guests was noticed to have a hoof instead of a foot.
