The Hellfire Club on Montpelier Hill

A hunting lodge built above Dublin in 1725, using stone taken from a prehistoric cairn destroyed for the purpose — locals said at once it would end badly. The roof was taken off by a storm soon after. The Irish Hellfire Club later took the building over; accounts of what went on inside vary, and the best-known has a card game at which one of the guests was noticed to have a hoof instead of a foot.

Kathleen Goligher and the Belfast Circle

From 1914 the Belfast engineer William Jackson Crawford studied the Goligher family circle and wrote three books about the psychic rods with which sixteen-year-old Kathleen raised the table; he weighed her, photographed her by red light and worked out an entire mechanics. After Crawford's death in 1920 the physicist Edmund Edward Fournier d'Albe took over the circle. He sat twenty times and published his report: the ectoplasm in the photographs was ordinary white cloth hanging from under her skirt, and Kathleen lifted the table with her foot, which he once saw plainly. She was not seen in public again.

Leap Castle

A castle in County Offaly held by the O'Carroll clan, where in 1532 one brother stabbed another — a priest — at the altar during mass. The room has been called the Bloody Chapel since. During repairs in the early twentieth century an oubliette was opened beneath it, spikes at the bottom; the remains filled three cartloads. Separately there is the Elemental, an entity whose arrival is said to come with a smell of decay and sulphur.

Tsaritsyno and the Rejected Palace

The Tsaritsyno State Historical, Architectural, Art and Landscape Museum-Reserve is an expansive imperial palace and park estate in southern Moscow, commissioned in 1775 by Empress Catherine the Great. It stands as Europe's largest complex built in the Russian Gothic (pseudo-Gothic romanticism) style and represents one of the most dramatic architectural sagas in Russian history: the nearly completed grand residence was abruptly rejected and ordered dismantled by the Empress herself, leaving the site as a romantic, unfinished ruin for more than two centuries.

The Sukharev Tower and Jacob Bruce

The Sukharev Tower was a masterpiece of late-17th-century Russian civil architecture, formerly standing at the junction of Moscow's Garden Ring, Sretenka Street, and Prospekt Mira. Commissioned by Peter the Great and designed in the ornate Naryshkin Baroque style, the 60-meter-tall red-and-white monument functioned as a ceremonial city gate, the administrative birthplace of the Russian Imperial Navy, and the nation’s first astronomical observatory. In folk memory, the landmark is permanently tied to one of Peter's closest intellectual confidants, Field Marshal Jacob Bruce, who was mythologized as the supreme warlock and sorcerer of the Russian Empire.

Popular mythology claims this priceless collection of ancient Greek, Latin, and Hebrew literature was sealed away inside subterranean brick vaults beneath the Moscow Kremlin, the Alexandrov Kremlin, or the royal estate of Kolomenskoye, standing for four centuries as one of the world's most sought-after literary grails.
