O'Hare and the Hole in the Cloud

On 7 November 2006 a group of United Airlines staff at Gate C17 at Chicago O'Hare — mechanics, a supervisor, ramp crew — saw a dark disc hanging motionless above the terminal under a solid overcast. By their account it went up so sharply that it punched a round hole in the cloud, through which blue sky was visible for a couple of minutes. United and the Federal Aviation Administration at first denied receiving any report. After a Freedom of Information request from the Chicago Tribune, a recording surfaced of a controller discussing the sighting with a supervisor. The official explanation is a weather phenomenon. No flights were held, and no investigation followed.

Smile Dog

One of the first internet horror stories built around a file rather than a text. It appeared around 2008: a journalist visits a woman to ask about a picture called smile.jpg that drives mad everyone who sees it; the woman refuses to talk and eventually sends the file. The trick is that the file does not exist — every "original" circulating online appeared after the story did. The reader has to imagine the image, and imagination does the job better than any drawing.

Resurrection Mary

America's best-known vanishing hitchhiker. Since the 1930s drivers on Archer Avenue outside Chicago have told the same story: a fair-haired girl in a white ball gown asks for a lift, says nothing the whole way, and disappears from the car opposite the gates of Resurrection Cemetery. Attempts have been made to attach the story to several real girls who died young, and none of the versions fits the details. The vanishing-passenger plot is older than the motor car — it is known from tales of horse-drawn carriages — but the Chicago version is fixed to one road and one gate.

Bray Road and the Wisconsin Werewolf

On a country road outside Elkhorn, drivers have reported the same thing since the late 1980s: a large creature covered in fur, standing or running on two legs, with a dog-like muzzle. A local paper gathered the accounts in 1991 and the Beast of Bray Road went national. What sets it apart from the usual Bigfoot story is the face — witnesses insist on a wolf's, not an ape's, and hold to it under ridicule.

Baikonur and a Sky Full of Explanations

The Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Kyzylorda Region of Kazakhstan is the world's first and largest operational spaceport, long surrounded by reports and rumors of unidentified flying objects. Particular intrigue surrounds accounts by Soviet military personnel and rocket engineers describing glowing spheres, discs, and light beams observed over launch pads and ballistic missile silos.

Zhigulyovsk and the Mirages of the Samara Bend

The bend of the Volga at the Zhiguli hills is among the longest-described anomalous places in Russia. Local tradition speaks of mirages — a city that is not there, seen above the hills — and of lights that go into the mountain. In Soviet years amateur expeditions came here, and from the 1980s the Samara Bend was a fixture on lists of such places alongside Molyobka. Geography explains a good deal: temperature inversions over the bend are frequent and produce genuine mirages, and the limestone hills are riddled with adits and karst. The national park that contains all of it takes a restrained view and runs its trails without promising anything.

The Vashka and the Piece of Alloy

In 1976 a fragment weighing about 1.2 kilograms was found on the bank of the Vashka in Komi, which threw off a shower of sparks when struck. It was analysed at several Soviet institutes: an alloy of rare-earth elements — cerium, lanthanum, neodymium — with a trace of uranium, unusually pure and with a grain structure characteristic of powder metallurgy. The conclusions diverged. Some researchers wrote that industry of the day did not produce such a composition; others pointed to mischmetal, an alloy used in pyrotechnics and in lighter flints. The samples were dispersed among laboratories and no whole fragment now belongs to anybody. The find site is an ordinary stretch of taiga river with nothing to see.
