The Nullarbor and the Knowles Family Car

On 20 January 1988 the Knowles family were driving at night across this treeless plain in southern Australia when, by their account, a bright light appeared ahead on the highway. Then, they said, the car was lifted off the road, the cabin filled with black dust and a burnt smell, and their voices went unnaturally high; after a while the car dropped back onto the surface and they drove on with a blown tyre. At the roadhouse at Ceduna the police examined the car: dents in the roof, a black film inside and out. Samples of the film were analysed; the results disagreed. One explanation is a pressure surge from an oncoming truck on an empty road combined with panic. The family never withdrew their account.

Wycliffe Well, the Roadhouse UFO Capital

A roadhouse on the Stuart Highway in the middle of the Northern Territory — fuel, a campground and a pub — which has declared itself Australia's UFO capital. Reports have come from here since the 1940s, when an army camp stood nearby, and never stopped. The owners have taken an enterprising view: the walls are painted with green figures, models stand at the door, and the bar keeps a folder of cuttings and a book for visitors to write down what they saw. The honest part of the explanation is the sky. This is some of the darkest, clearest air on the planet, satellites and fireballs are visible to the naked eye, and the route to Pine Gap — the joint American-Australian facility, about whose work little is known — passes nearby.

The Min Min Lights

A town deep in Queensland that gave its name to the lights seen on the roads of the burnt west: glowing spheres that follow a car or a rider and keep their distance for hours. Aboriginal people described them before Europeans arrived. In 2003 the physicist Jack Pettigrew showed experimentally that under a temperature inversion a light source beyond the horizon can appear as a nearby object — an elegant explanation that does not cover every case.

The Tsaritsyno State Historical, Architectural, Art and Landscape Museum-Reserve is an expansive imperial palace and park estate in southern Moscow, commissioned in 1775 by Empress Catherine the Great. It stands as Europe's largest complex built in the Russian Gothic (pseudo-Gothic romanticism) style and represents one of the most dramatic architectural sagas in Russian history: the nearly completed grand residence was abruptly rejected and ordered dismantled by the Empress herself, leaving the site as a romantic, unfinished ruin for more than two centuries.

The Sukharev Tower and Jacob Bruce

The Sukharev Tower was a masterpiece of late-17th-century Russian civil architecture, formerly standing at the junction of Moscow's Garden Ring, Sretenka Street, and Prospekt Mira. Commissioned by Peter the Great and designed in the ornate Naryshkin Baroque style, the 60-meter-tall red-and-white monument functioned as a ceremonial city gate, the administrative birthplace of the Russian Imperial Navy, and the nation’s first astronomical observatory. In folk memory, the landmark is permanently tied to one of Peter's closest intellectual confidants, Field Marshal Jacob Bruce, who was mythologized as the supreme warlock and sorcerer of the Russian Empire.
