Pascagoula and the Two Men on the Pier

On the evening of 11 October 1973 Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker were fishing from a disused pier on the Pascagoula River. By their account an oval glowing object settled nearby, three figures with claws instead of hands came out of it, lifted them both and carried them inside; some time later they came to on the pier. The men drove themselves to the sheriff's office. There they were left alone in a room with a hidden tape recorder — a trick meant to catch accomplices out. On the tape they talked to each other exactly as they had to the investigators, and Parker prayed. Hickson repeated the account until his death in 2011. Parker said nothing for almost forty years and spoke only in 2018.

Honey Island Swamp and Its Monster

A cypress swamp on the Pearl River in Louisiana, and the thing said to walk in it: over seven feet, grey matted hair, yellow eyes set too far apart, and a smell people compare to something dead. Its fame rests on one man — Harlan Ford, an air traffic controller who came out of the swamp in 1963 with a story and, later, with plaster casts of a four-toed print. The local explanation is more colourful than the creature: a circus train is supposed to have derailed by the river early in the century, and the chimpanzees that survived are supposed to have bred with alligators. They cannot. The two are different classes of animal and the sentence means nothing. What the swamp does have is water you could lose a wild boar in at two paces, and a smell of its own — enough to account for anybody else's.

Gulf Breeze and Ed Walters's Photographs

From November 1987 a contractor named Ed Walters brought a series of photographs of a glowing object with a row of ports along its underside to the local paper in this Florida town — anonymously at first, then under his own name. Within two years there were some forty pictures, and Gulf Breeze had become a place of pilgrimage. In 1990 the new occupants of the Walters house found a model made of foam and film in the attic, matching the object in the photographs. Walters said it had been planted. Meanwhile other residents, police officers among them, were reporting lights over the sound in those same years, and some of those reports have nothing to do with Walters. The case remains a classic of how one disputed witness drowns out everything else.
