St. Paul and the UFO Landing Pad

In 1967, for Canada's centenary, this Alberta town built itself a UFO landing pad — a raised concrete structure with a map of Canada made from stone from every province and a plaque inviting any visitor from space to land. It was opened by Canada's minister of national defence, Paul Hellyer, who arrived by helicopter. Forty years later Hellyer became the first former defence minister anywhere to state publicly that extraterrestrials exist. The pad is still there and remains the town's landmark, with a tourist office beside it. In more than fifty years no landing has been recorded.

Malmstrom and the Ten Missiles That Went Down

On 24 March 1967 ten Minuteman intercontinental missiles at this Montana base's Echo flight went off alert within minutes of each other, one after another. At the same time the guards on the surface were reporting a glowing object hanging over the gate. For years the case was known only from the account of the duty officer, Robert Salas, who spoke publicly from the 1990s. Declassified documents later confirmed both the mass failure and that its cause was never established; the official reading attributes it to electromagnetic interference from work on the complex. A similar episode was described in the same period at Minot base.

Okanagan Lake and Ogopogo

A lake in British Columbia where the creature was known long before Europeans: the Syilx called it N'ha-a-itk and carried a small animal as an offering when crossing the water. Settlers began reporting a long dark humped body in the 1870s. The name Ogopogo comes from an English music-hall song of the 1920s and stuck so firmly that it displaced the original.

Great Falls and the Mariana Film

On 15 August 1950 Nick Mariana, who managed the local baseball team, saw two bright objects over the stadium with his secretary and got them on 16 mm film. The sixteen seconds he shot are among the first motion pictures of the phenomenon ever taken. The Air Force attributed the footage to sunlight reflecting off two F-94 fighters that passed over the town at about that time. Mariana replied that he had seen the aircraft separately and later, and claimed that the first frames — in which the objects were larger — were missing when the film came back from the military. The film survives and is still gone through frame by frame by both sides of the argument.

Baikonur and a Sky Full of Explanations

The Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Kyzylorda Region of Kazakhstan is the world's first and largest operational spaceport, long surrounded by reports and rumors of unidentified flying objects. Particular intrigue surrounds accounts by Soviet military personnel and rocket engineers describing glowing spheres, discs, and light beams observed over launch pads and ballistic missile silos.

Zhigulyovsk and the Mirages of the Samara Bend

The bend of the Volga at the Zhiguli hills is among the longest-described anomalous places in Russia. Local tradition speaks of mirages — a city that is not there, seen above the hills — and of lights that go into the mountain. In Soviet years amateur expeditions came here, and from the 1980s the Samara Bend was a fixture on lists of such places alongside Molyobka. Geography explains a good deal: temperature inversions over the bend are frequent and produce genuine mirages, and the limestone hills are riddled with adits and karst. The national park that contains all of it takes a restrained view and runs its trails without promising anything.

The Vashka and the Piece of Alloy

In 1976 a fragment weighing about 1.2 kilograms was found on the bank of the Vashka in Komi, which threw off a shower of sparks when struck. It was analysed at several Soviet institutes: an alloy of rare-earth elements — cerium, lanthanum, neodymium — with a trace of uranium, unusually pure and with a grain structure characteristic of powder metallurgy. The conclusions diverged. Some researchers wrote that industry of the day did not produce such a composition; others pointed to mischmetal, an alloy used in pyrotechnics and in lighter flints. The samples were dispersed among laboratories and no whole fragment now belongs to anybody. The find site is an ordinary stretch of taiga river with nothing to see.
