The Krasnoyarsk Pillars
0
Syenite rocks up to a hundred metres high outside Krasnoyarsk, around which a local culture of free climbing without equipment grew up from the nineteenth century, with its own language and rules. The rocks have names: the Grandfather, the Feathers, the Lion's Gate. The climbers keep their own roll of the dead — dozens over a century and a half, and almost every rock is tied to someone's death.
